When I started helping people coordinate their lives through color, a.k.a. "color consulting," over 10 years ago, I wasn't aiming to make paint any more than kids who enjoy coloring aim to make crayons. Back then, I fumbled around with fan decks and numbered paint chips. I could never find the colors I wanted. I would hold up "Color 0357" to a wall (one of 100 variations of the "Color 0300" series), and say, "Yes!" Then I'd rush to the paint store and back, only to find out that "Color 0357" didn't look the same dried on the wall as it did on the chip (and that's part of why we created the Mini-Paint Pouch™!). I'd remix and remix and remix. Eventually I started to wonder, where were those yellows, greens, reds, purples, blues, and oranges that I loved? Those perfect color relations I knew in nature? They certainly weren't in those fan books I lugged around in the back seat of my car! It didn't take long for me to realize that if I really wanted to help people coordinate their lives through color, I was going to have to do things different - not only did I need to make my own crayons, I needed to make my own box!

With that in mind, I took the six gorgeous colors of the rainbow and began creating Devine Color's® 12 unique palettes. By neutralizing and transforming the original six, I created our more supporting palettes: Pacific Trail Mix™, Pebbles and Creams™, and Espresso Blends™. While by enhancing the original six, I created our leading palettes: Valley Vineyards and Spices™, Cool Grasses and Evergreens™, Natural Blondes™, Desert Lights™, Silver Skies™, Ocean Tide Pools™, Sweet and Hot Beans™, and Woven Tattles™. When I eventually went to a manufacturer with my 12 unique palettes, he asked me with a genuinely concerned face, "But, but... but what about fan books and color chips?" and I said, "I was thinking we could just do that by hand." And so, with fingers daubed in paint, we went to work creating our handmade palettes with real dried paint on them! I wanted it so that when people we're making choices, they could choose between true colors, and not mere representations, so that they'd know exactly what they were getting into. I knew that we had to charge people up front for this service, but as a consumer myself I had come to the conclusion that paying more for the right color on the front-end will cost less than the wrong color on the back-end.
