About: Devine Color

Scott Goins, CEO

Scott Goins

I share Gretchen's vision of making the world a better place through color and have been part of the company since the beginning. Gretchen and I both believe that Devine Colors' philosophy sets us apart from the "competition," whoever they may be.

If you'd like to discuss Devine Colors' plan for world domination, have a billing question, or would like to talk about whether or not Devine Color paint actually covers in one coat, I am the man to call.

I attended Greenhills School and then Eastern Michigan University, jumped off a very tall cliff into the Salt River in Arizona, canoed the Ausable River in just 14 days, surfed near the Sebastian inlet in south Florida, met John Delorean, spent a number of years in the Automotive field, have been self-employed, married Gretchen Schauffler(!), raised two sons and two stepdaughters, and am a vociferous reader.

The best thing about my job is that nobody bothers me. I'm alone in the office day after day. I get so bored sometimes I even do my job.

Now and then, I bring my standard poodle to work so I have someone to talk to. She looks like a little white lamb, no fancy poodle cut for my Daisy. She's born of pedigreed show dogs, schooled by one of the country's top dog trainers, yet she's got the soul of a Marxist or Harpo Marx, it's hard to tell. I talk to her about everything, all my hopes and dreams. She'll be stretched out on the carpet and, when I'm done speaking, she gives a big sigh, like she's heard it all before.

There are Mantras for everything here at Devine Color. Mantras about Color Principles and Color Purpose. Words I try to remember when customers call. Then there's the 5,000 year old mantra for world peace we chant at yoga class. Obviously, that one's not working. Still, you never know when the right colors might brighten your life and help change things. Daisy and I are standing by.

Growing up in Hollywood, California exposed me to so many people and careers. The list of career possibilities were endless: veterinarian, movie star, professional dancer, movie star’s veterinarian — it was so hard to decide, so I ventured off to college wanting to be an artist. Coming from two artist parents, I was prohibited from majoring in art, of course. They told me to be practical, so I majored in business and minored in modern dance. Maybe I could be a dancing businesswoman.

After graduating from college, I did work in the entertainment industry for Amblin Entertainment and the Walt Disney Company — I think that is pretty close to being a dancing businesswoman.

After spending my first 30 years in Los Angeles, I made the big move to the Northwest, so that I could live a life like Little House on the Prairie. I spent most of my years in Oregon working for Nike until my path led to Devine.

My career has really been about brand building — much like raising children, allowing them to grow, but protecting them from getting on the wrong path. I have been compared to Edna Mode from The Incredibles.

My path has taken me all over the place, but I believe you ultimately end up where you belong.
